Croatian

Croatian belongs to the South Slavic group of languages, just like Bosnian, Serbian or Montenegrin, to which it is very similar. Basically it is a newly named Serbo-Croatian that was used on this area until the year 1992 in the Federation of Yugoslavia, nevertheless, purist trends were strong – thanks to a complicated relationship with Serbia – and this also applies to efforts to “purify” the language and replace non-Slavic and Serbian words with new words. Apart from Croatia, it is the official language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Molise area in Italy, and in the Austrian Burgenland.
