Danish

Danish belongs to the North Germanic language group and has undergone the biggest development and most changes among the Scandinavian languages. During the 12th century, when the Hansa cities were established, Danish has adopted a lot from Low German, mainly vocabulary related to production and crafts. Its grammar is similar to the Scandinavian languages, mainly Norwegian. This was caused by the fact that Denmark was under Norwegian control, up until the beginning of the 19th century. Danish is also spoken on the Faroe Islands, in Greenland, and in parts of Schleswig-Holstein, making the total of native speakers around 5.5 million.
