Latvian

This official language of Latvia belongs to the Eastern Baltic language group, together with Lithuanian. It has emerged as an individual language during the 16th century. Although it is relate to the Slavic languages, it is not understandable to the Slavs, as it has kept its rather archaic form. Latvian is, apart from Latvia and the neighbour countries, only spoken in the smaller groups in the USA, Ireland, Great Britain, Canada, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.

The Latvian grammar is very influenced by the German syntax, also the spelling is largely based on the German principles. The word order is free and it depends on the word that is most important in the sentence. The vocabulary contains basically no vulgar expressions, politeness is expressed in a similar way as in Czech language – by using the 2nd person of the plural number.
