Ukrainian

Ukrainian belongs to the East Slavic languages, being most similar to Belarusian, but also to Polish, Slovak and Russian. It stems from the Proto-Slavic and as the language of common people it spread into the Old Church Slavic, until it became a separate language. It is the official language in Ukraine, also in Transnistria and a part of Vojvodina; its dialects freely cross into Polish and Belarusian, one of the dialects is known as the Rusyn dialect.

An interesting phenomenon in the spoken language is the so called surzhyk, in which the Ukranian pronunciation and grammar mingles with Russian vocabulary.
